Steam is a blunt instrument for a flower this fragile. The blossoms collapse, the nectar-sweet top of the scent leaves with the heat, and what reaches the condenser is not worth the fuel it took.

So the trade does something else. A hydrocarbon solvent, in practice hexane, is circulated through fresh blossom and lifts the aromatics out along with the waxes and pigments. Drawing the solvent off leaves a waxy solid called a concrete. The concrete is washed in high-proof ethanol and chilled so the waxes drop out of solution, and what filters clear of them is the absolute.

That is a solvent process, said plainly, and no amount of the word gently changes what it is. The reason to spell it out is that the alternative on a shelf is a bottle reading honeysuckle essential oil, which is an infusion, a blend, or a fiction.

We would rather explain the method than borrow a word that sounds cleaner than the method deserves.

A Medicinal Crop First, an Aromatic Second

Ours comes from China, where Lonicera japonica is grown on a scale that has nothing to do with perfumery. It is a major medicinal crop there, and has been for centuries, which is the only reason blossom exists in the quantity an extraction needs.

That is worth understanding before anyone romanticises the supply chain. Genuine honeysuckle extraction traces back to those growing regions almost without exception, and a supplier implying a boutique European source is describing something else.

We buy from extraction houses we can name, against a written specification, and the house that made your lot is on file here whether or not you ever ask.

Picked By Hand In a Window of Hours

Flower absolutes are among the least efficient extractions in the trade. You work in hundreds of kilos of blossom for a kilo of finished material, every kilo of it picked by hand, inside a window measured in hours of the day rather than weeks of the season.

That arithmetic is the price. It is also why the category attracts stretching: at this cost per kilo, a little dilution is very profitable and very hard to smell.

We are not going to publish a flowers-to-absolute ratio we cannot trace to the house that ran the batch. Describing the scale honestly is worth more than a number we would have borrowed from somewhere else.

The Figure We Ask For, and Two Others

Independent analysis, and one number that most honeysuckle paperwork would rather summarise than state.

Quantified per lot. Cosmetic-grade absolutes belong in single-digit ppm, and a supplier offering reassurance in place of a figure has told you something.

Aromatic profile

Confirms blossom-derived material rather than an impression assembled out of isolates and sold under the flower's name.

Dilution check

A carrier hiding in an absolute leaves saturated fatty acids sitting where an absolute has no reason to carry any.

Name your lot and the paperwork follows it to you. Nothing is posted here for general browsing, because a wall of certificates proves nothing about the bottle you were sent.

Three years stored cool and dark, and this is a material that tends to settle rather than fade in its first year. Absolutes are heavier and less volatile than distillates and they do not go over the way a pressed citrus does.

It thickens with age and thickens further in the cold. That is normal and not a fault. Warm the bottle in your hand for a minute and it pours again.

Never neat on skin. Take it well down in a carrier, prove it on a small patch, and remember a trace is enough to carry a whole blend. We make no medical claims for it, and when a picking season disappoints we go short rather than filling in with a lot we cannot stand behind.
